ResilienX Chosen for NASA UAM Grand Challenge

GENIUS NY Company Selected for Advanced Drone Research Program

Syracuse, NY – ResilienX, Inc., has been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to participate as part of a team in the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Grand Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to test the capabilities and readiness of unmanned aircraft (drones) and systems that could revolutionize mobility in and around densely populated metropolitan areas. When fully implemented, UAM will provide a safe and efficient system for passenger and cargo air transportation and could include such innovations as small package delivery within dense urban areas; personal taxi service by air; air medical services, such as patient ambulance transportation; and cargo delivery to underserviced communities.

The proposal team was led by the University of North Texas – Denton, and in addition to ResilienX, included the University of Massachusetts – Amherst; the Lone Star UAS Center of Excellence; OneSky; Frequentis; and Unmanned Experts. The team will be collaborating with NASA to support developmental airspace simulation over the next several years.

“NASA is leading a new age of mobility and this collaboration will ensure that the ResilienX platform will be integrated into advanced airspace simulations and eventually demonstrations,” said Andrew Carter, president and CTO of ResilienX. “This is an enormous opportunity for us and we are excited to help the industry develop this critical technology.”

ResilienX will be providing their FRAIHMWORKTM (Fault Recovery and Isolation, Health Monitoring frameWork) software suite to monitor the health and integrity of the ecosystem and enable fault tolerance, graceful degradation and contingency management. Their product will provide In-time System-wide Safety Assurance (ISSA) to ensure the numerous components in the complex environment are working correctly, safeguarding the overall resiliency and safety of the airspace.

“In 1962, President Kennedy challenged the nation to reach the moon in eight years,” said Ryan Pleskach, COO at ResilienX. “Apollo 11 landed on the moon less than seven years after his speech at Rice University. In that spirit, NASA has put forward a new revolutionary challenge and we’re excited to be a part of the next step forward in American aviation history.”

Recently, NASA began its engagement with teams and over the course of 2020 it will progress towards various developmental tests. The Grand Challenge itself will culminate with a full demonstration in an urban environment that tests the readiness of companies’ vehicles and airspace operators’ systems to operate during a full range of passenger transport and cargo delivery scenarios under a variety of weather and traffic conditions.
